The Bank Dick

Directed by Edward F. Cline

Release: 1940
Runtime: 72
Country: U.S.
Language: English

Comedy legend W.C. Fields (It’s a Gift) stars in one of his most famous roles as The Bank Dick. Egbert Sousé (Fields) is an unemployed drunk who divides his time between the Black Pussy Cat Café and his dreadful family. After unwittingly capturing a bank robber, he lands a job as a security guard which leads to complete absurdity. Written by the comedian himself under the pseudonym Mahatma Kane Jeeves and directed by Edward F. Cline (Fields’ partner-in-gags on My Little Chickadee and Never Give a Sucker an Even Break), The Bank Dick is one of the great classics of American comedy! The uproarious cast includes Una Merkel (42nd Street), Dick Purcell (Arise, My Love), “third stooge” Shemp Howard (Soup to Nuts), Franklin Pangborn (Hail the Conquering Hero), Grady Sutton (Man on the Flying Trapeze), Jessie Ralph (After the Thin Man) and Cora Witherspoon (Personal Property).
